SD I DM I | Mini design studio - MDS
It seems that in the settlements-building frenzy in Ethiopia, most planners have forgotten a hierarchy and a key ingredient of city/village-making: a commercial, cultural and often the historical, political and geographic heart. Truly, most of the new Ethiopian towns lack an articulated city center. This design studio scrutinises the development planning mechanisms and management strategies for city/town/village centers of newly emerged Ethiopian settlements. Effective action is needed to promote the rehabilitation and management of city/town/village heart/s and in this contexts to rationalise the past with the future needs of communities. The urban/rural development approach must ensure a framework for urban/rural projects and a system of urban/rural management that is sustainable by assisting social cohesion and economic vitality and improving the quality of life for inhabitants. For this design studio, smart villages (off-grid communities) will be chosen as design basis.
